For more than three decades, silence and secrecy have surrounded the estate of the late His Royal Highness (Dr.) Zulkarnaini Gambari Mohammed, the 9th Emir of Ilorin. But one woman, Princess Bilkisu Tinuola Gambari, has refused to allow that silence to erase truth or justice.
On November 13, 2025, the Kwara State High Court, presided over by Honourable Justice H. T. Kawu, heard the latest phase of the long-standing estate dispute. The hearing, centered on the administration and alleged mismanagement of the late Emir’s estate, saw Princess Bilkisu Tinuola Gambari appear personally in court, representing herself and the other heirs after decades of unresolved inheritance matters.
A Battle Against Fear and Suppression
In a courageous move, Princess Bilkisu informed the court that she and her family were appearing without legal counsel, not by choice but by necessity. According to her statement in open court, no lawyer in Ilorin was willing to take their case, citing concerns for their personal safety.
This revelation highlights a troubling reality: a system in which those seeking justice face intimidation and abandonment. Yet Bilkisu’s resolve did not waver. For 34 years, she and the other heirs attempted to resolve the matter internally within the royal family. For 34 years, their efforts were met with silence, manipulation, and unilateral decisions regarding the Emir’s estate.
Why the Heirs Went to Court
When His Lordship questioned why the matter had not been resolved “within the palace,” Bilkisu responded with a clear and compelling explanation:
“After 34 years of trying to resolve this matter internally, we had no choice but to turn to the law.”
Her statement captures the essence of what this case represents: not rebellion against tradition, but a plea for justice, fairness, and accountability within it. The heirs are not fighting the Emirate; they are challenging injustice within it.
Court Declines Ex-Parte Motion and Adjourns to December 18
The court declined to entertain the ex-parte motion, which sought to restrain further interference with the estate and to permit substituted service on the respondents. The matter was adjourned to December 18, 2025, for further proceedings.
Although some may perceive this as a procedural setback, it is, in reality, a testament to the heirs’ persistence. Despite institutional resistance and procedural challenges, Bilkisu and her siblings continue to demonstrate faith in the judiciary and in Nigeria’s constitutional promise of equality before the law.
Standing Up for Truth and Legacy
The estate of the late Emir of Ilorin represents more than land or property. It embodies the legacy of a revered monarch who ruled with humility and wisdom. It is painful and unfortunate that this legacy is now overshadowed by internal strife and alleged mismanagement.
Princess Bilkisu Tinuola Gambari’s decision to stand before the court without legal aid is not only admirable but historic. Her leadership symbolizes the voice of every silenced heir, every marginalized family member, and every citizen who dares to speak truth to power.
A Call for Transparency and Justice
As the case continues, Bilkisu and the other heirs have reaffirmed their faith in the judicial process and their commitment to ensuring that the estate is administered in accordance with Islamic law (Fara’id), family tradition, and the laws of the land.
Their demand is simple: transparency, fairness, and accountability.
For a case that has lingered for 34 years, that is not too much to ask.
The Path Forward
The hearing on December 18, 2025, will mark another crucial moment in this historic legal struggle. Regardless of the obstacles, one truth remains clear: the heirs will not be silenced.
As Princess Bilkisu Tinuola Gambari continues to stand firm, she represents not only her family but every Nigerian seeking truth in the face of intimidation and injustice.
