His Royal Highness Alhaji Zulkarnaini Gambari Mohammed (1914–1992) (6)

About the Case

The Estate of the Late His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Zulkarnaini Gambari Mohammed (1914–1992)

The ongoing case before the High Court of Justice, Kwara State, concerns the estate and properties of the late His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Zulkarnaini Gambari Mohammed, a respected royal figure and public servant who passed away on 23rd February 1992 in Western Germany. For over three decades, the estate of the late Emir — including properties in Ilorin, Kwara State, such as the Matchco (Ile Isana) site along Murtala Mohammed Way — has remained the subject of dispute, delay, and allegations of abuse of trust.
In October 2023, the Kwara State High Court issued Letters of Administration (Without Will) appointing four administrators to manage the estate. These were:
  • Sulu Ahmed Bolakale Gambari
  • Hajia Zeinab Ayobola Zubair
  • Hajia Funmilayo Buhari
  • Hajia Assiat Wuraola Gambari
However, the heirs and beneficiaries of the estate later discovered that one of the administrators had acted unilaterally and without consent, leasing the Matchco property to private developers for commercial purposes — a move that they claim was illegal, unauthorized, and prejudicial to the rights of the family and the estate.

The Legal Action

In response, the heirs — led by Tinuola Gambari and other lawful beneficiaries — filed a Writ of Summons and supporting motions before the High Court of Kwara State, Ilorin Judicial Division, seeking:

  • A declaration that the purported lease of the Matchco property is void, illegal, and of no effect;
  • An order revoking the authority of the administrator who acted outside his legal powers;
  • A directive for the remaining administrators to proceed with the lawful distribution of the estate according to law;
  • A perpetual injunction restraining the developer or any third party from further construction or trespass on the disputed property.

Additionally, the family submitted a formal petition to the Kwara State Police Command and the Economy and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in October 2025, calling for investigation into alleged fraudulent dealings, property trespass, and abuse of administrative power connected to the estate.

What This Case Represents

This case is not merely about property — it is about legacy, justice, and the protection of a family’s heritage. For more than 30 years, the heirs of the late Emir have pursued transparency, lawful distribution, and respect for Islamic and constitutional inheritance rights.

Their ongoing court proceedings stand as a call for accountability and fairness in the administration of estates across Nigeria — ensuring that no heir, regardless of gender or position, is denied their lawful share.
